2020 Citizen Science Tour
DAN Europe, in collaboration with PADI EMEA, partners of the MPA-ENGAGE project, launched the "2020 Citizen Science Tour".
The role of DAN & PADI is through a training program called PADI/DAN Basic Research Operator to train Diving Centers and Instructors in actions aimed at involving recreational divers in the collection of data useful for monitoring the effects of climate change in MPAs of the Mediterranean.
Thanks to the experience of DAN and PADI on Marine Citizen Science, the goal is to create an "open box" on Citizen Science that makes Diving Centres interact with MPAs in the Mediterranean.
The final idea is the creation of a new business model for the Diving Centre network, which will involve recreational divers through specific training in Citizen Science surveys. Recreational divers will be involved with the slogan "5 minutes together under water for Climate Change" and will also be able to make their contribution by donating their dive profile to DAN Research which has been contributing for many years to medical research on the effects of physiology during diving.
On summer 2020, DAN & PADI have launched the "2020 Citizen Science Tour" from Sardinia with the aim of train Citizen Science Diving Centers within the MPA-ENGAGE project and beyond.
The tour has continued in September in the MPA of Portofino, partner of the project and then in October in Sicily in the MPA of Ustica, associated partner of the project.
Empowering Citizen Science actions in Ustica MPA
2020 Citizen Science training programs continued in the Mediterranean Marine Protected Area of Ustica, which is an associated partner of MPA Engage project.
From September 21st to 25th, diving instructors were trained on a series of monitoring protocols and learned how to contribute tracking the impacts of climate change in coastal areas.
They also learned how to train other recreational divers, disseminating the use of these common tools.
Citizen Science in Portofino MPA
Second phase of the activities of MPA Engage project to Engage Citizen Science in the Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas.
From September 8th to 11th MPA Engage project will be in the Portofino MPA to support the next field test of Citizen Science strategies that make Diving Centres interact with MPAs in the Mediterranean.
Researchers and MPA managers will implement common monitoring protocols with representatives of the Diving industry and the Diving Centres.
The ultimate goal is to involve recreational divers in the collection of data useful for monitoring the effects of climate change impacts and promote environmental awareness.
Asinara National Camp
From 2nd to 9th August DAN & PADI have involved 20 kids from the "Asinara National Camp" project in collaboration with the MPA Asinara associated partner of the project.
The 20 Kids were trained as PADI/DAN Basic Research Diver, and engaged in data collection through the Visual Census protocol developed within the MPA-ENGAGE project.

Citizen Science in Tavolara MPA
Hosted by the MPA of Tavolara Punta Coda Cavallo (Sardinia, Italy) - during July 27th - 30th - the MPA Engage project has supported a field test of Citizen Science strategies and implementation of common monitoring protocols with representatives of the Diving industry, researchers and Mediterranean MPAs.
At the same time, researchers and managers were involved in training focusing on the implementation of socio-ecological vulnerability assessments for their MPAs.
